Marriage as they say is the most special event in every couple’s life. It is the time when two people are finally united by love and commitment in the context of marriage. How did weddings originated? What’s behind these various traditions we observe? Marriage is a sacrament, this is how we view it, but did you know that in early times the very essence of marriage is more on convenience? The original intention of marriage is to secure a well environment for bringing up the children as well as the possession and transfer of property. Yes, its intention is somehow superficial. Eventually, the perspective on marriage has evolved; it is now more about true love rather than convenience. Talking about the origin and essence of wedding, there are many traditions observed during weddings. One of this is the use of wedding ring. Considered as the oldest tradition, the use of wedding ring is still applied today and perhaps even in the coming generations. The ring symbolizes everlasting love. The origin of wedding ringsis rooted on the Egyptians who used twisted pieces of plants; this started the tradition of wearing wedding rings. It was placed on the 4th finger of the female’s left hand for the belief that there was a vein in that finger that is directly connected to the heart. It was then called “vena amoris” or “love vein”, the ring symbolize a love with no end. During the time when Christianity was dominant in Europe, vena amoris was replaced with a holy seal. Priests would take the wedding ring and touch the first three fingers of the left hand (thumb, index and middle) while reciting: \\\\\\\"the father, the son and the holy ghost.\\\\\\\" Upon reaching the 4th finger, the ring was placed on it to seal the marriage. On the other hand, Asians has another story to tell. The “puzzle rings began in Asia, wherein puzzle rings are used as a sign of loyalty. If a bride were to take her puzzle ring off, it would fall to pieces. These pieces could then only be put back together by knowing the solution to the puzzle. Above all, the use of wedding ring is a part of tradition that could and should never be removed.
